Hello my name is Scarlett Kellermann and I am originally from Brazil. I have designed an intensive language program called Portuguese 111 Days.
This program is meant for those who are in a hurry to learn and start using Portuguese in elementary every-day contexts. I know that time is a precious and limited resource. It’s pointless to focus so much mental energy on language features that will have minimal impact on your every-day needs. This is why my program and my lessons in general are focused on:
- conversational activities
- assistance with learning strategies
- guidance with after-class practice
- frequent review of previous topics
I have a teaching degree (BA) in Portuguese and more than 10 years of experience. I taught in several language schools and people of all ages. I have lived in 4 countries, so I had the opportunity to teach Portuguese to people of different native languages.
I am currently living in Israel and working as a language mentor is my full-time professional occupation. Most of the students who start to learn Portuguese with me are either moving to Portugal or Brazil. Due to the large amount of Israelis who are interested in building/strengthening connections with Portugal, I started to become more and more involved with European Portuguese too.
Nowadays I teach both Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese in Kfar Saba and also online. Most of the class is concentrated on speaking. I often use PowerPoint slides, online images and short videos. I make a conscious effort to engage the student in conversational activities as much as possible. Both grammar and new vocabulary are constantly brought up in real conversations so that the student will assimilate them little by little.
We use Google Docs for expressions/vocabulary and sentences that we build together during class. This is the idea: the time in class is mostly spent to develop oral skills. The time between the lessons is when the student is encouraged to engage in written exercises that will stimulate their memory. I have plenty of exercises and activities for after-class practice.
I try to use the target-language as much as possible and in order to do that I also present some strategies to fight mental barriers. If you’re learning from scratch, after 2 months of classes and also after-class practice, more than half of the class should be in Portuguese.
